To be honest, most VPN comparison articles are ads. They push services with high affiliate commissions to the top and slap on titles like "best VPN" without even using them. I wanted to write this differently. This article is based on data I recorded while actually using NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark for about six months, from September 2025 to March 2026.

The test environment was a KT 500 Mbps connection based in Seoul, and the main metrics measured were speed, stability, streaming compatibility, customer support response time, and real-world ease of use. Prices are based on each service's official two-year plan pricing as of March 2026.

Doesn't the answer become obvious if you only look at price?

Answer: no. Price is only the starting point.

The surface-level numbers are simple.

ServiceMonthly price on 2-year planSimultaneous device connectionsMoney-back guarantee
Surfshark$2.49Unlimited30 days
NordVPN$3.4910 devices30 days
ExpressVPN$6.678 devices30 days

Looking only at price, Surfshark is overwhelmingly attractive. But to make the right choice, you need to know how much the price difference reflects differences in features. ExpressVPN is almost twice as expensive as NordVPN. Is that difference really justified? After six months of use, my conclusion was: "yes if you are a heavy streaming user, no for everyone else."

Things to watch out for with long-term contracts

All three services offer much lower prices with a two-year commitment, but you must check that standard pricing applies upon renewal. For example, NordVPN's regular monthly price is around $13.99. If it automatically renews after two years, you can be charged nearly six times more. Many users use a strategy of signing up again through a new promotional link before the contract ends.

Speed test: how fast are they in practice?

person putting money business finance

The biggest drawback of a VPN is reduced speed. Some slowdown compared with your original speed is unavoidable because of encryption processing and rerouted traffic. The real question is how much slower it gets.

Measurement method

I used Speedtest.net and Fast.com together, measuring each server location three times at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 10 p.m., then averaging the results. The connection servers were based on three locations: the United States (New York), Japan (Tokyo), and Germany (Frankfurt).

Average speed from Korea to U.S. server (download)

ServiceAverage speedRetention vs. original speed
NordVPN312 MbpsAbout 62%
ExpressVPN298 MbpsAbout 60%
Surfshark271 MbpsAbout 54%

Average speed from Korea to Japan server (download)

ServiceAverage speedRetention vs. original speed
NordVPN421 MbpsAbout 84%
ExpressVPN398 MbpsAbout 80%
Surfshark356 MbpsAbout 71%

Thanks to its NordLynx protocol, which is based on WireGuard, NordVPN maintained the most stable speeds across all routes. ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol was also solid, but occasional slowdowns were observed during peak hours. Surfshark had the lowest absolute speed among the three services, but it was still sufficient for general web browsing and 4K streaming.

Server infrastructure: numbers are not everything

person wearing suit reading business newspaper

These are the official server figures as of March 2026.

  • NordVPN: 111 countries, 7,400+ servers
  • ExpressVPN: 105 countries, 3,000+ servers
  • Surfshark: 100 countries, 3,200+ servers

By server count alone, NordVPN is far ahead. But what matters more than the number of servers is server quality and how congestion is managed.

Most NordVPN servers are operated as physical servers using RAM-only infrastructure, while some are virtual servers. ExpressVPN claims to run all servers on TrustedServer technology, meaning data is wiped every time a server reboots. From a security standpoint, this is the strongest structure. Surfshark offers distinctive features such as IP Rotator and Dynamic MultiHop through its Nexus technology.

For users in Korea, what matters in practice is the quality of servers in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Across all three regions, NordVPN recorded the most stable speeds.

In-depth comparison of security features

Encryption standard

All three services use AES-256 encryption. There is effectively no difference on this point. The differences lie in protocol choices and additional security features.

Trustworthiness of the no-log policy

All three services claim that they "do not store logs," but they verify that claim in different ways. NordVPN undergoes regular audits by major auditing firms such as Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers, and it also disclosed independent audit results in 2025. ExpressVPN and Surfshark also conduct external audits and publish their results.

Looking at past cases, NordVPN had a server breach in 2018, but because there were no logs, user data was not leaked, and the company later overhauled its security systems. In a way, that incident proved the practical effectiveness of its no-log policy.

Streaming compatibility: Netflix, Disney+, Watcha, and more

If you use a VPN for streaming services, this section matters most. I tested success rates for accessing overseas Netflix libraries and region-restricted content.

Success rate for accessing the U.S. Netflix library (6-month average)

  • ExpressVPN: 94% (highest)
  • NordVPN: 88%
  • Surfshark: 81%

ExpressVPN's reputation as the leader in streaming was confirmed in real-world use. As Netflix continues to strengthen its VPN blocking technology, ExpressVPN tends to replace workaround servers the fastest. When access failed and I contacted customer support, they provided an alternative server within an average of two hours.

NordVPN attempts streaming optimization through its SmartPlay feature, and it works well in most cases. However, when Netflix updated its IP blocking, there were cases where the response was delayed by one to two days.

Surfshark covers the basics well, but when streaming in 4K HDR, buffering caused by speed drops occurred more often than with the other two services.

BBC iPlayer has intensified VPN blocking as it strengthens verification of U.K. residency. Surfshark showed intermittent failures.

Customer support quality: how do they respond when problems occur?

Over six months, I contacted customer support for each service a total of nine times. I intentionally submitted identical or similar questions for comparison.

Response time and quality

ServiceAverage first response time24/7 live chatResolution rate
ExpressVPN4 minutesO89%
NordVPN6 minutesO85%
Surfshark11 minutesO82%

ExpressVPN's customer support is among the best in the industry. Even for technical questions, it provided practical solutions rather than scripted replies. NordVPN was slightly slower but generally gave sincere and useful responses. Surfshark had the slowest responses among the three services, and complex issues sometimes required repeated inquiries.

Overall verdict and who each VPN is for

NordVPN — the most balanced choice

It received consistently high scores across speed, security, server infrastructure, and price. At $3.49 per month, it is much cheaper than ExpressVPN while the performance gap is not large. I recommend it for security-conscious users and people who want to use a VPN for multiple purposes.

Recommended for: Security-conscious users, corporate remote workers, torrent users

ExpressVPN — worth the investment for heavy streaming users

Its high price is the only real downside. Streaming success rate, customer support quality, and overall stability are all top-tier. If you frequently use overseas Netflix, sports broadcasts, or BBC iPlayer, the extra $3-4 per month can be justified.

Recommended for: Heavy overseas streaming users, users who prioritize customer support quality

Surfshark — unmatched value for family plans

Unlimited device connections are a strength other services cannot match. If an entire family or multiple team members use it together, the cost per person becomes extremely low. Its absolute performance is somewhat weaker, but at $2.49 per month, it is more than good enough.

Recommended for: Family sharing users, students on a limited budget, VPN beginners

FAQ — 6 frequently asked questions

Q1. Will using a VPN slow down my internet a lot?

A. Some slowdown is unavoidable, but modern VPNs minimize speed loss thanks to WireGuard-based protocols. In the tests for this article, NordVPN maintained about 60-84% of the original speed. On a 500 Mbps connection, that is still enough for YouTube 4K streaming or downloading large files even after enabling a VPN.

Q2. Which of the three services is the safest VPN?

A. From a security standpoint, ExpressVPN's TrustedServer technology has the strongest structure. It applies RAM-only servers across its entire network, wiping all data whenever a server reboots. NordVPN also provides additional security layers such as Double VPN and Onion over VPN. Since all three services have had their no-log policies verified through independent audits, there is no major difference for ordinary users.

Q3. Which VPN is best for watching the U.S. version of Netflix from Korea?

A. Exp
