Choosing an AI laptop: app compatibility, memory and 3-year costs
Check actual app and peripheral compatibility, memory, battery and warranty instead of NPU numbers. Learn how to collect prices and cost inputs for a three-year comparison, including a scenario with zero resale proceeds.
List the apps and features you need before looking at a laptop's AI logo. Confirm that those features actually work on the device, then compare memory, battery and total cost to reduce unnecessary spending.
AI in a product name does not mean every artificial-intelligence feature works offline. People mainly using web services need different components from those processing images or models locally. This article provides a purchase comparison sheet to narrow two candidates using the same criteria, rather than ranking products.
Which comes first: CPU, GPU or NPU?
The CPU handles general work, the GPU graphics and parallel calculations, and the NPU supported AI workloads as a dedicated component. Which component is used depends on the app. A higher NPU figure does not make video editing, games and every AI model proportionally faster.
TOPS specifies trillions of operations per second. Distinguish an NPU-only figure from a combined CPU-and-GPU figure, and check numerical precision and measurement conditions. Numbers obtained under different conditions are not a direct ranking of app speed. Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as a separate category with powerful NPUs and notes that support varies by device and feature. See Microsoft's Copilot+ PC explanation.
| Main workload | Check first | Easily overlooked costs |
|---|---|---|
| Documents and web services | RAM headroom, keyboard, display | Operating system and service subscriptions |
| Video calls and captions | The app's NPU feature support | Webcam, microphone, hub |
| Photo and video editing | GPU and memory supported by the software | External storage, power adapter |
| Running local AI | Model size, supported devices and memory | Storage, heat, noise |
| Mobile work | Battery under actual working conditions | Weight including charger, extra charger |
How do you check memory and app compatibility?
Open your current apps together and record memory usage and tasks that slow down. When deciding between 16GB and 32GB, consider simultaneous workloads and future expansion rather than numbers alone. There is no basis for making 32GB mandatory for everyone. Conversely, soldered RAM may not be replaceable later, so check service and specification documents for the exact model.
For a Windows ARM device, check app execution and peripheral operation separately. Ordinary apps may run while drivers for specialist printers, security software or virtualization are incompatible. Microsoft explains that drivers must support ARM. Read its Windows ARM compatibility FAQ and ask the manufacturer using precise device and app versions.
If an app supports local processing, check supported file formats and feature scope too. One on-device feature does not turn off every upload and synchronization process. For work involving personal information, read the app's transmission and storage explanations separately.
Start by comparing two actual configurations and their app requirements
The following configurations were compared in manufacturer documents on September 15, 2026. This is an example of filling a comparison sheet, not a ranking of the latest products. Do not mix configurations with different sizes, processors or operating systems under the same name.
| Item checked | MacBook Air 13 M4, 2025 | Surface Laptop 13.8, 7th Edition for Business, 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration compared | 10-core CPU · 8-core GPU · 16GB · 256GB | Snapdragon X Plus X1P64100 · 16GB · 256GB |
| Operating-system family | macOS | Windows 11 Pro, Arm |
| Main ports | 2 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C · MagSafe 3 · 3.5mm | 2 USB4 USB-C · USB-A 3.1 · Surface Connect · 3.5mm |
| Actual app and peripheral testing | Not performed | Not performed |
| South Korean sales SKU and checkout price | Unverified | Unverified |
Specifications come from Apple's M4 technical specifications and Microsoft's 7th Edition for Business fact sheet. Do not interpret the table as actual performance or battery-test results.
List exact app versions, essential plug-ins and printer and audio-device drivers. Check macOS and Windows Arm support separately. As Microsoft's Arm guidance explains, drivers can be an issue beyond merely opening an app. A seller's exact SKU identifies the sales configuration within a product family.
Do not decide which is cheaper before filling in quotes
In a 3-year cost table, separately record the unit checkout price, essential hubs and external devices, 36 months of paid apps and verifiable maintenance costs. An unchecked price is blank, not 0 South Korean won. Neither model has an established cost advantage until actual carts and app-contract terms are entered.
If estimating resale value, first make a table assuming 0 South Korean won for both products; subtract estimated resale value only in a separate scenario. Unknown repair costs do not mean free repairs. Include extras based on the individual's equipment, such as a need to connect USB-A devices. Record comparison date, sales configuration, included items and discount conditions so the table can be updated when prices change.
A 36-month worksheet and worked example
Fill the blanks with quotes from the same date. All amounts are South Korean won (KRW). If subscription prices change, add the actual charges for each period instead of multiplying one monthly price by 36.
| Item | Candidate A | Candidate B |
|---|---|---|
| Device checkout price | ____ | ____ |
| Essential extra devices | ____ | ____ |
| Essential apps per month | ____ | ____ |
| Subscriptions for 36 months | ____ | ____ |
| Verified maintenance and repairs | ____ | ____ |
| Baseline resale value | 0 | 0 |
| Subtotal of verified costs | ____ | ____ |
The following fictional A and B are unrelated to the two real models above. These are neither market prices nor actual quotes. Assume A costs KRW 1,500,000 for the device, 100,000 for essentials and 20,000 per month for apps; B costs KRW 1,800,000, 40,000 and 10,000 respectively. Monthly fees stay unchanged for 36 months and resale is zero for both.
- A: 1,500,000 + 100,000 + (20,000 × 36) = 2,320,000 KRW
- B: 1,800,000 + 40,000 + (10,000 × 36) = 2,200,000 KRW
For the included items, B is KRW 120,000 cheaper. Maintenance and repairs are unknown in this example, so KRW 2,320,000 and 2,200,000 are partial subtotals, not confirmed total costs. Add verified maintenance in your comparison and flag unknown items. This difference does not make an incompatible app or essential device acceptable.
💡 Practical insight: why the workload must match
Maximum battery hours are difficult to compare directly when brightness and workloads differ. Narrow the choice to two devices, then choose one of your actual tasks: editing documents during a video call, exporting the same video or running the same local model. Record whether power is connected, screen brightness, runtime, fan noise and memory configuration. Even with the same model name, different RAM, display or operating systems mean different configurations. Saving the small model code on a sales page reduces the risk of applying a family-level review to different specifications.
Before paying, separately check return conditions, South Korean warranty and repair arrangements, charger and essential ports, and paid subscriptions. High figures and large discounts cannot compensate for incompatible work. Leave performance unverified when testing evidence is absent.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Are all services free with an AI laptop?
No. Device features and paid-service subscriptions are separate. Check account, pricing and internet requirements for the features you want.
Q. Is a higher NPU number always faster?
The app must use that NPU; memory and power conditions also matter. Compare results from the same actual task.
Q. Is 32GB RAM essential?
Not for everyone. Decide using simultaneous memory use, expansion options and budget. Check local models' requirements separately.
Q. Is compatibility checked once an app opens on ARM?
No. Check plug-ins, drivers, printers and actual save and export tasks to reduce problems during work.
Q. Should I buy a more expensive device based on its resale value in 3 years?
Resale value is an assumption. Calculate whether the budget still works when disposal value is 0 South Korean won or falls.
Q. What should I match first just before purchase?
The exact model numbers on the manufacturer's specifications and checkout page. Distinguish products sharing a family name but differing in memory, display or operating system.
Completion conditions before payment
Check in order: save the exact SKU → verify app and plug-in versions → verify printer, audio and virtualization drivers → run the same file task → add device, required accessories and 36-month subscriptions → check returns and warranty. Leave tests and local prices absent from the manufacturer sheet as unverified. Count resale as zero first; if a key app or device fails, do not treat NPU TOPS or a discount as compensation.
